The Tour de France had hardly begun this week when the drama ensued! A couple of top riders were sent home in the first 48 hours of the tour with broken bones and egos after a massive crash (there were a few actually) sent the peloton smashing into the hard tar at speeds of 45km/h and up!

Luckily the tour’s very first African team, MTN Qhubeka, went unscathed! Making history on the 14th of January this year, this elite team was invited to take part in the tour and to say they are doing our country, and continent proud is an understatement… what they are doing is simply phenomenal! Yesterday, the team’s top climber, Daniel Teklehaimanot, who was born in Eritrea, claimed “King of the Mountain”, the polka dot jersey – one which is awarded to the tour’s top climber. I’ve ridden some of those climbs, or at least tried, and trust me, they are beyond tough!

His team mates are also performing like rock stars with Evald Bassoon Hagen in 10th place in the green sprint jersey, and Merhawi Kudus and Louis Meintjes in the top 30 “best young rider” category!

These men really deserve our whole hearted support so lets make them feel incredible! Whether you’re a newbie, a 5 year old with training wheels on your bike or a die-hard sub-3 Cape Town Cycle Tour type gal/guy, get on your bike and join the “army of legs”  for our boys in France!

It’s easy; join Strava if you’re not already a member, search for and follow Team MTN Qhubeka @Tdf, log your ride on the Strava app any time between 4 and 26 July, and then Tweet the team using #TeamMTNQhubeka. The kilometers will then be displayed to the riders in France, on a screen next to the tour bus, in real time showing them that the nation is cycling for them, with them. Fans have thus far logged 19 574km of love for the team!
